What does it mean to be planet kind?

One of my life’s biggest turning points came when my family moved to the country. We lived next door to a market garden, and were shocked by the massive amount of pesticides being poured onto the products that feed us all.

We saw first-hand the destruction of our land and water. Our back paddock, used to grow commercial potato crops, was contaminated by DDT – and our drinking water from a 70m deep well was full of nitrites.

The market garden opened my eyes to the scale of the synthetic chemical problem, and sparked the creation of Everkind.

From the very beginning, I knew that Everkind needed to tread lightly on this earth. That’s what led us to our ‘planet kind’ promise. A promise that we’ll choose the less travelled path, find ways to minimise and eliminate harm, and actively restore this spectacular planet we call home.

We don’t inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

In a world awash with greenwashing, ‘planet kind’ means finding ingredients that were grown in a genuinely sustainable way. So we’re driven to keep up a fully certified organic supply chain. We prioritise sourcing ingredients grown without synthetic herbicides, insecticides, fungicides or fertilisers, and search out premium products from artisan producers.

Along our planet kind journey, we quickly learned that – even within organics – there are varying degrees of quality. Especially when it comes to essential oils. At Everkind, we seek out like-minded producers who are committed to the integrity and therapeutic intention of their products. You can really smell the difference – and your body can tell the difference, too.

That’s why, here at Everkind, every ingredient is carefully considered, including the mighty minerals that deliver our deodorant range’s all-day freshness. We were honoured to have our commitment to quality recognised in New Zealand Organic Week Awards, when Everkind won Organic Product of the Year 2018 and 2019.

There’s no such thing as ‘away’.

Ain’t that the truth. Before selling that first jar of Everkind deodorant, we undertook a comprehensive zero-waste audit. When we first launched, glass was the best option for recycling. But by 2018, we’d found a way to move into purely paper-based packaging for our new stick deodorants. We also introduced eco-parcels for Everkind deliveries, eliminating thousands of plastic courier satchels from landfill.

That means – from the parcel it arrives in, to the tube it lives in – the materials for Everkind deodorant sticks are home compostable. So once you’re done using Everkind to take care of your body, you can use it to take care of the garden, helping reduce your own waste, too.

We’ve come a long way on our zero-waste journey. But even today, we’re still always on the look-out for new ways to improve, with each innovation moving us closer to our zero-waste goal.

Time spent around trees is never wasted.

They say ‘trees are the lungs of the world, purifying the air and strengthening the people.’ We couldn’t agree more. True to our values, Everkind is based on a small block of land in rural Taranaki. Our production studio is surrounded by natives and fruit trees, attracting Tui and Kereru all year round. Each year we add to the plantings on the block, nurturing those trees with compost made on-site from waste paper and cardboard. Nothing makes a better covering for the base of a tree, than repurposed cardboard boxes and rich thriving compost.

When it comes to our own production, we find it’s the little choices that make a world of difference. Our water source is filtered rain, any wastewater feeds the orchard, LED lighting brightens our space, and solar power delivers our internet connection.

All these little footprint-friendly steps were recognised in the 2018 TSB Taranaki Business Awards, with highly commended awards for Innovation and Environmental Excellence. And for us, those steps are still just the beginning.

Being planet kind doesn’t mean compromising on performance.

When it comes to performance, there’s no need to compromise. We truly believe you can care for your body, without doing harm to the planet. So we work hard to give you the highest performance, with the lowest impact. And that’s what being planet kind is all about.

Our story started with two parents wanting to give their children a naturally healthy life. Today, it’s grown into a beautiful community of organic bodycare lovers. Caring for you is just what we do. So, we’ll only ever make bodycare that’s good for you, your loved ones, and the planet.
