What does it mean to be people kind?

The way we figure it, bodycare should never come at the cost of human health and wellbeing. That’s a promise we won’t compromise on, and we call it ‘people kind’. A promise that we’ll always put people before profit.

We aimed to be a business for good from day dot. From that very first jar of deodorant, we’ve gone about things in a way that’s good for you and for the people in our supply chain – and we’ve supported people who do good in the world, too.

Just like you, we’d like to leave this world a better place than we found it, and this sits at the heart of every business decision we make. We believe that it’s not just what you sell, but what you stand for that matters.

We’re here to give you a better choice. Better for your body, and better for everybody. And here’s a little more about how we’re doing it, by being people kind.

Being people kind takes more than words.

Here at Everkind, we give a minimum of 2% of revenue or 20% of profits (whichever is the greater) to help make a genuine difference for people in need. You might be wondering why we chose to run with this revenue or profit model. Well, we wanted to make sure our business made a difference from day one. And when you’re just starting out, profit can often be pretty small. So by giving ourselves the option to give a percentage of our revenue, too, we can make sure we’re giving back as much as we can.

Every drop makes a difference.

In a world where 140 million children are orphaned through disease, war, or abandonment, it can seem impossible for a small family business in Aotearoa New Zealand to make a difference.

But the way we see it, everything seems impossible until it’s been done. And when lots of people do little acts of kindness, they can create big ripples of change. We’re doing what we can to create some ripples of our own, by supporting a small orphanage in India, and making a difference in the lives of the children who live there.

We’re also helping Charity:Water bring clean water to the 1 in 10 people on our planet who don’t have it. We chose Charity: Water because we think access to clean water changes everything. For communities, it means there's less disease, more education, and more time and ability to grow food and earn an income. People can start businesses, improve their homes, and take charge of their futures.

When it comes to our communities closer to home, random acts of kindness and lending support to like-minded local charities is another part of our people kind promise. It’s our small way of saying thank you to our beautiful Everkind family of organic bodycare lovers, for helping us do some good in the world. Because alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.

Love expands, and that’s the beauty of it.

When you live on a small Island in the Pacific, it can be tricky to know what’s happening throughout your supply chain. But for us, being people kind also means caring for the people who help make our products. So we’ve worked hard to seek out like-minded businesses who say no to harsh work environments, child labour, and harmful business practices.

The International Organic Movement started with peoples’ wellbeing at its heart. One of its early aims was to make sure that everyone involved in organic and sustainable production and processing has a good quality of life. That their basic needs are met, their work environment is safe, their compensation is fair, and their work satisfaction is high.

These basic principles live on today in organic certifying agencies worldwide. Every year, producers and manufacturers across the globe are physically audited to make sure the movement’s principles of social justice are being honoured.

So, what does this mean for Everkind? It means that by choosing organically certified ingredients, we’re choosing to support a supply chain that’s committed to social justice – and a system that rejects the exploitative treatment of farm workers. We know that no system’s perfect. But if we support fair trade, fair pricing, fair access to land and seed, and ethical production, we figure that’s got to be a more people kind way to be.

Being people kind means keeping our promises to you, too.

When it comes to your bodycare, our people kind promise means taking care of you like family. Choosing what’s right, not what’s easy. Being straight up with you, strictly no tricky labels or over-promises allowed. We know we won’t get things right 100% of the time – after all, nobody’s perfect. But we’ll listen, we’ll learn, we’ll respond. And once we know better, we’ll do better.

At the end of the day, being people kind means giving you good honest bodycare that’s part of a ripple of positive change. If that sounds like a bit of you, head over to Everkind’s online store and shop the range.
